The Well

Croghan Hill

  • St. Patrick climbed the Hill long ago.


  • St. Patricks' horse jumped half way down the Hill. His horse hit a stone and it sprung into a well.


  • The horse knelt down to drink and made a knee print on a stone. People say if the stone is taken away it will return to its rightful place.


  • You cannot boil the water from the well.


  • On March the 17th people drink and pray.


  • Many people drink the water and pray.


  • The furze bushes on the hill are burned. This is an old tradition and people used to drive their cattle through the smoke to keep them healthy for the year ahead.
