Croghan Hill
- Croghan Hill in Irish, Cruachán, means round topped hill.
- The ancient name for the hill was Cruachan Bri Eile which maens heap of the slope of Eile. Eile was the daughter of Eochy Feileach who ruled about 100BC and sister of Queen Maeve of Connacht.
- Croghan Hill is 769 feet above ground.
- Millions of years ago Croghan Hill was a volcano.
- At the time Croghan Hill was a volcano, Ireland was a coastal swamp.
- Croghan Hill was visited by St. Patrick and St. Brigid.
- Bishop MacCaille built a church, which is now the site of a graveyard, near the top of the hill.
- The O'Connor Faly would climb the hill to survey their land. Their castle, now in ruins, is at the foot of the hill in Old Croghan.
- The O'Connor Faly were crowned on Croghan Hill.
- On the top of the hill if it's a clear day you can see the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Hill of Allen, The Wicklow Mountains and the Mourne Mountains.
- Croghan Hill can be seen for miles in Leinster.
- There is a concrete post on the top of the hill which is sometimes used for making maps.
