Graveyard

Croghan Hill

  • There is an old graveyard near the top of the hill.

  • The stone that was used to build St.Mac Cailles church was used for the wall around the graveyard.

  • St.Brigid got her veil in St.Mac Cailles church.

  • It is not known when the church fell out of use but the religious significance of the site continued through its use as a graveyard.

  • When they were bringing a coffin up to the graveyard on the hill, they used to tie a rope onto each other to make sure they wouldn't fall. When they got to the graveyard they would walk around the graveyard three times with the coffin befor entering the graveyard.

  • When there was a shortage of top soil for the graves they used to remove sods of soil from outside the walls of the graveyard for top soil for the graves.
